About the Artist

Kati Hernández

A native of Cuba, Kati Hernández, grew up surrounded by the sounds of the drum and Afro-Cuban dance traditions that shape her as an electrifying choreographer, educator, and dancer. Her knowledge of dance and choreography reveals her intricate and versatile style, making her a highly sought-after performer, nationally and internationally. In Los Angeles, she is a central figure in a large dance community where she co-founded Kimbambula Production and is founder and director of Kimbambula Cuban Dance Ensemble. Hernández is creator of a pioneering online dance and music program that preserves and promotes Cuban culture worldwide to create vibrant cross-cultural communities. Her nationally acclaimed signature program, Orisha Dance Therapy is a language of expression through movements and rhythms of the rich Afro-Cuban Dance diaspora. It combines the magic and flavor of Cuban rumba, oricha dances, and the graceful dance and sound of traditional Cuban Son along with the funky sound of Timba and groovy Cuban Salsa. As a facilitator and producer, she hosted the Essence of Cuba, a paramount reunion of Afro-Cuban masters in L.A that included members of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas and legendary Maestro Lázaro Galarraga. She is praised for her Afro-Cuban Jam sessions at Ford Theatres. She has also performed and taught workshops at Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), Grand Park, and Metro Art L.A. She has brought her artistry to venues such as The Getty and Skirball Cultural Center, and choreographed and performed in music videos for artists such as Colin Hay, San Miguel Perez, and Iris Sandra Cepeda. Kati’s work is a true illustration of her heritage and an endless celebration of Cuban culture.
